Penge Green Gym Newsletter

Dear Penge Green Gym Supporters

New Workshops and raised beds

In August we welcomed the team from Froglife to Winsford Gardens.  They led a fun and very informative workshop on the wildlife in Britain with emphasis on amphibians such as frogs and newts.  Local families came along and learned about these fascinating creatures and how to encourage them in this urban environment.

We want to say a big thank you to all the team at Froglife for creating such a great event.

Another Big Thank you

We are delighted to announce that we are the recipients of a grant from the Greggs Community Foundation.  The mission of the Greggs Foundation is to "make a difference to the lives of people in need in the heart of Greggs' local communities."  With the money we are able to replace our broken down raised beds.  We can now raise them up to a level that can be enjoyed by wheel chair users in the park.  Thank you Greggs!

Other projects in the park

We have now put up some of the bug hotels that the brownies helped us make last month.  They look very smart on the fence and hopefully will be filled with guests very soon.

We have also decorated our other raised beds with paintings created by children from our open day and our volunteers.  They looks very bright and cheerful.

We are now beginning to think about projects for autumn and winter.  We will be finishing our new raised beds and continuing our work to improve our growing area.

We continue to get strong volunteer numbers and are always happy to have feedback from the local community who use the park.

Penge Green Gym Newsletter Early Summer 2016

See what's happening in Penge this week....

Dear Penge Green Gym Supporters

Come and enjoy the annual Penge Green Gym Open Day!

It's that time of year again when we prepare the gardens for our open day. We've been busy tidying the gardens, making plans for children's activities, nurturing our seedlings and baking lots of yummy cakes!

Dan has been preparing a demonstration insect hotel with cardboard and bamboo.  Ching, a volunteer from our sister group at Bromley Green Gym will be back again this year to do some more fantastic face painting and balloon animal making.  We also have a new and improved (and slightly trickier) treasure hunt so come and have a go!  We also had an army of volunteers this week and we were able to get lots of tidying done.

Our new volunteer Mary is also excited to be doing the yoga taster session on Sunday.  If you fancy having a go she has suggested you bring a mat if you have one as the grass may be a little damp.

So please come along, bring your friends and family and help us celebrate another great year of volunteering at Winsford Gardens.

The garden is looking particularly lovely at the moment.  The traditional rose bushes are in full display and many other flowers are enjoying the warmer weather.

Thank You

We wanted to say a big thank you to Waitrose for letting us be a part of their communities matters money raising scheme for May.  Hopefully we'll find out soon how much their customers raised.

Also thank you to The Dorset Road Allotments who have promised the proceeds of this Open Day Raffle to the Penge Green Gym.

See what's happening in Penge this week....

Dear Penge Green Gym Supporters

A chilly spring at Winsford Gardens

We have had some bright sunny days in the garden but also the biting north wind has been blowing making gardening challenging.  A recent storm also damaged the large twisted willow, taking down a large branch.  This has now been cleared and hopefully the tree will be no worse for wear.

We need your help

This May Penge Green Gym has been chosen by Waitrose Community Matters to receive a share of the £1000 pot donated by Waitrose each month to local causes. We need your help to fill the box with tokens.  Just go along to Waitrose Beckenham and collect a token from the checkout.  Even better, go to the self-service checkouts where there are pots of tokens and take as many as you like to put in the perspex box.   We would be very grateful if you could let anyone you know who shops in Waitrose Beckenham to support us.

Raised Beds

we have now filled one raised bed with plants and an irrigation system made of old plastic bottles with holes in that will hopefully slowly feed water to the plants on very dry days.  We are trying out a new system called Hugelkultur in the 2nd raised bed.  This involves putting wood and turned over turf underneath a layer of topsoil.  This will hopefully keep in the moisture and the wood will slowly rot down providing nutrients for the plants above.

A special visit

Yesterday, our original leader and all round TCV guru Lizzy Kaimakamis came to spend the day with us.  Lizzy was instrumental in setting up the Penge Green Gym and gave us the knowledge and confidence to become a strong and stable community group.  Lizzy will be going on maternity leave very soon and as a thank you for all her hard work over the years we presented her with a very special Penge Green Gym t-shirt.  We wish you all the very best and hope to see both of you very soon.

Volunteers

We would like to welcome Mary to the fold.  Mary is a yoga teacher so we look forward to learning some good stretching exercises!

And Finally

The day you've been waiting for, it's our annual open day.  Put the date in your diaries, it's Sunday 12th June.

Penge Green Gym Spring 2016 Newsletter

Dear Penge Green Gym Supporters

Happy Easter from Winsford Gardens

We have had a busy couple of months here at Winsford Gardens. Our winter projects have included building raised beds at the Croydon Road entrance, these are now complete and we will be filling them with soil in preparation for new plants that will brighten up the entrance and encourage new visitors to the gardens.

We have also been expanding the 4th rose bed and creating a hazel fence around it. It has now been filled with roses that were bought with a grant from the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association. This is the second grant from the MPGA for our formal rose beds. Many thanks to them for all their help.

Spring is also well and truly on the way and we have been using our brand new cold frames to keep our new seedlings warm.

Also, thanks to a generous donation of rocks, we have built a new rockery wall near to the Garden Road entrance. We will be able to plant this up with rockery plants in the next few months.

Thank you

We would like to say a big thank you to all the local people who come to the gardens and tell us how much they like what we are doing. It is always very gratifying to hear that our work is appreciated. We'd especially like to thank the lady who brought us a box of biscuits to say thank you. They were lovely!

Volunteers

We have been lucky enough to welcome some new volunteers to our ranks over the last couple of months. It is always exciting to hand out our t-shirts on the volunteers 4th session.
